Ep. 1: A History of Halloween

Dust off your broomsticks and open up your spell books, this week we're diving into the ever-evolving history of our favorite spooky holiday - Halloween! Elise takes us through the origins of All Hallows' Eve, starting in Ireland with the Celts. We'll explore the mysticism of Samhain, ride alongside the headless Dullahan and learn why we light up our carved pumpkins at night. We'll travel through the centuries, investigating Halloween's evolution and its journey to becoming a household tradition throughout America. Halee will dish up a delicious slice of chocolatey Soul Cake, baked in our very own Easy Bake Oven, and fill us in on the most up-to-date spooky news. Happy Haunting!

The Gerrish Family

NEWS: John Gerrish, Ellen Chung and daughter Miju were found dead in the Devil’s Gulch area alongside their dog Oski. The cause of death was determined this week, but has left many scratching their heads.

Pucá

The púca, as seen in its rabbit-like state, is a shapeshifting creature popular in Celtic lore. It can change into a horse, human and more.

Mummering

A group of mummerers pose for a photo with their noisemakers.

Dennison Books

Dennison Books, also known as Bogie Books, helped commercialize Halloween in America. They sold crepe paper and gave advice on how to decorate your house. Fun fact: in Hocus Pocus, Max and Dani share the last name Dennison. Is this a fun little Easter egg for all us Halloween aficionados out there?

Anoka, MN

Anoka, MN is the Halloween capital of the world!

William Roy Prather

William Roy Prather was tragically murdered on Halloween night in 1959 by a group of racist white teens.

Soul Cake!

Our very first cake made in the pod cottage. We learned it’s a bit cold in the cottage to use buttercream frosting. This Soul(less) cake is an ode to the Soul Cakes of old, that were given out as good luck.

Lauren Cho

Lauren Cho went missing in the California desert on June 28. As of yesterday, her body had been found. Our thoughts are with her family.
